    Dear Cari,
The title of my book was going to be The Kingfisher, mostly because of what the bird symbolises, but also because of what happened on our terrace one day about 15 years ago.

Kookaburras (Australian kingfisher) are normally very shy, but one day four young ones positioned themselves, one after the other, on the terrace railing right in front of me! They were extremely noisy, so I got them some meat to quiten them down a bit. One of the birds replied by flying onto my shoulder. This reminded me of the Norse god Odin’s two ravens which always sat on his shoulders to tell him about the status of the world.

The young kingfisher then flew onto the nearest window ledge which was so narrow he could hardly get a foothold. He hung on there for a minute or so, looking into or at the window and then flew away. The young bird had made me curious by now, so I walked over to the window and looked in. Can you imagine what I saw?

I could see the room inside as well as the reflection in the glass of the world outside! Was the bird trying to teach me “as inside, so outside” 🙂

    With Love, knut
